Shearing Pinx Interview

Nic from Shearing Pinx did an e-mail interview with me for the show blog. Check it out.

How did your tour go?

Tour was amazing! We had a lot of fun seeing old friends and making new ones.

Equipment was delayed at the border. Brain from Endless Latino who re-pressed “Ultra Snake” on CD drove up to Vancouver and brought it back! He’s such a rad guy! Van got towed in Brooklyn, Erin got to play with AIDS Wolf + Steve (from Athletic Automaton/Arab On Radar) in Montreal. Picked up our dear friend Burrow Owl there…..Got sick in Guelph, missed the show. Canada was immediately so beautiful and freezing cold. Got to spend the last day of tour at my mom’s place watching TV and relaxing in the hot tub.

Where did it take you?

We went down the west coast to San Fran, then across through the mid-west all the way to Minneapolis then down through Chicago, Columbus and over to the east coast. Then we went up into Quebec and back across Canada. All in a month’s time.

Do you feel like you're a bit out of the way in Vancouver?

Absolutely. No one will come here because it’s out of the way. Maybe more now these days because of some new attention Vancouver’s gotten. I feel pretty cut off.

Is there much going on there?

There’s a lot of amazing projects that are coming & going at all times. The music scene here is quite large. Everyone plays in a band. But the one huge thing that is so incredibly stifling is the serious lack of venues!!! Van-City needs to loosen-up with the uptight regulations and red tape people need to go through to have a venue.Fake Jazz Wednesdays at the Cobalt and the Emergency Room have secured a beautiful thing here. Without them, things would be bleak, I’m sure.

You've put out an amazing amount of material. Do you yourselves even have the full set?

I have everything we’ve ever done but as for the actual packaged release, the answer is ‘No’. I’m missing the following:

Filthy Lucre” CDR

Searcher” CDR

How does Shearing Pinx go about making a track? Do you do a lot of jamming?

Jamming is essential. More than half the stuff we’ve released is a moment caught in time when we were fucking jamming it out!!! We incorporate jamming/imrpov into many of our songs, the result: the song always being a little different each time we play them. We always record the vocals later when we use a 4track or in the studio, but record everything else live.

What's your connection with Isolated Now Waves?

I started INW back in 2001. It’s been mostly a vehicle to release the stuff I’ve been doing. Jeremy and Erin, along with others like Nu Sensae and Bill Blat (thankless) have helped immensely!!!! It’s become a sort of collective in a weird way, but not entirely….. it’s strange, but still radikal none-the-less. I’m at #200 and I’m not sure what it’s gonna be !!!?!?!?!?

How long has this project been going on for?

SHPX have been playing now for almost 4 years. Febuary 14 2009 is our anniversary. Send presents.

How did it get started?

Canadian Residency. Hustler White, Freya Giles and guitar whorship. I wouldn’t play with JV Dub until he cut off his dredlocks.

I'm assuming you've got a lot of plans in terms of releases.

What's the next big one?

Divorce Records will hopefully release a 2xLP “______” next year sometime.

Got a split 7inch with Twin coming out sometime in the next few months. We’re going to try and do a shitload of recording.

What are your tour plans?

Hopefully Europe next. Not sure, but that’s what we’ve decided to shoot for. Japan would also rule! HENTAI ! !!!!!

Thanks a lot to Nic for taking the time to do that interview. You can listen to Shearing Pinx's tracl Trip Gama along with a lot of other fantastic Canadian music in this episode of the Crasier Frane Show.
